John Carter (Of Mars) - LOVE THE BOMBS

Mars ain't no place to set a movie. In fact, it's cold as hell. This is a lesson Andrew Stanton would learn in 2012 when the release of his dream project, a mega-budget adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' massively influential John Carter novels, was met with spectacular apathy from critics and audiences alike. Released a month before The Avengers, this mocap-heavy sci-fi/fantasy/western was going to kick off the next great Disney franchise, but inexperience, bad timing, and one of the most ill-advised marketing campaigns in recent memory doomed it to the scrap heap. A shame, since it's one of the most charming and lovingly-crafted adventure flicks of the last decade. In this edition of How I Learned To Love The Bombs, we detail how a Pixar director with no live-action experience rescued John Carter from 80 years of Development Hell, the trilogy and more we almost got from a team with three Oscars and a Pulitzer between them, Lynn Collins' turn as the 2010's most unsung action heroine, and how this movie is one Ocean Master away from just being Aquaman.

AVP: ALIEN VS. PREDATOR Commentary Track

IN THIS CORNER, HAILING FROM LV-426, THE PHALLIC EYE IN GIGER'S EYE, THE HUDSON DESTROYER... THE XENOMORPH! And... in this corner... from parts unknown... he's the last laugh on Schwarzenegger... he's one ugly mother f*cker... THE PREDATOR! And whoever wins... doesn't really matter because we'll still be getting a really disappointing sequel either way. But we're not here for requiems! We're here for a monster mash-up of a BOP 'n A Movie! Remembered for being a big dumb CGI laden action flick, with years removed and upon reflection... well, it's still like half that. BUT more interesting than it's reputation allows! This feature commentary will dig deep into the Antarctic to detail how this is in reality a practical effects spectacle (with little CGI), standing as a fun rumpus beat 'em up despite it's flaws, and boasting a long forgotten and killer survivor girl that definitely needs more credit and appreciation. So, prepare to deep throat a facehugger for Paul W.S. Anderson's AVP: ALIEN VS PREDATOR!

EVENT HORIZON Commentary Track

Our final stop on this roller-coaster of quality is Paul W.S. Anderson's incomplete cult classic, 1997's EVENT HORIZON! In this feature commentary, we perform a loving autopsy on a film that began life as a simple ghost story in space, and evolved into a psychological journey through hell... before an insecure, cold feet studio left us with a final cut that reaches for the stars but only nearly gets there. From hiring Sam Neill to deconstruct his own film persona, to throwing Actual Satan into a traditional sci-fi plot, we go through the surprisingly bold decisions made by a filmmaker most known for playing it dumb, and end up with a newfound respect for the man who gave us Resident Evil. But that's a tragedy for another time...

DEEP RISING Commentary Track

Just one year before he gave us The Mummy, director Stephen Sommers would ask himself, "what would have happened in Die Hard if Godzilla showed up halfway through?" The result would be one of the most unique and subplot-burdened genre films of the era. From Jerry Goldsmith's score to Treat Williams devouring the scenery at every turn, we're diving 30,000 fathoms to uncover what makes this vessel far more sea-worthy than it has any right to be, and mourn a SURPRISE cinematic universe we very nearly had. No, really.

BOP REVIEWS: Star Wars - The Last Jedi

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS was a film that ultimately re-ignited my long dormant love of a galaxy far, far away, and it didn't really disappoint whenever I walked out of the theater two years ago. Despite the plot feeling very familiar, I'd always been keen on the idea of the Star Wars saga as the ultimate nostalgia trip - keep in mind, I was never a big fan of anything related to the Expanded Universe, got no real enjoyment from the prequels to the point that I consider them outside of the canon of the original trilogy, and basically considered the original films where my interest lived and died. The most I could say that I got into the series beyond those original three - A NEW HOPE, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and RETURN OF THE JEDI - was that I had played a couple of the games, and not even the ones everyone else holds dearly. I stuck to admittedly poor side games like Bounty Hunter and The Force Unleashed, because honestly, Star Wars was more of a thing I had liked as a kid, when Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker had been engaged in a battle of familial wits and The Force was something still elemental and vaguely magical in nature. That ended, so I moved on.

BOP Review: Elysium

So I saw ELYSIUM the other day. Before going in, I had read some dismissive reviews that seemed a little hypercritical.  The consensus seemed to be that ELYSIUM didn’t come close to touching DISTRICT 9. I hate the idea of judging this film off of its predecessor, considering these movies are not connected story-wise.

That said I went into the movie with tempered expectations. I still left the theater feeling underwhelmed.
