With themes of toxic masculinity, adulthood, and the friggin' coolest haunted house put on film, there's plenty of charm to be found in this trilogy capper before the big tonal reboot! Neither had we until the passing of it's star, Rutger Hauer, but what we found was a chronicle of the far-flung future of 2008, where a troubled detective who doesn't play by the rules searches the flooded streets of London for a killer who may be something more - or less - than human. In other words? B-Movie heaven! Listen we as we discuss it's eerily feasible "future" setting, the avalanche of plot points that take us from gene sequencers to astrology charts, whether or not this movie knows it's ridiculous, the joy of seeing prestige actors dress like action figures, why it really should have been called Black Tide, and how Stephen Norrington gave us the first live-action Venom. It's always comes back to Venom!

From hiring Sam Neill to deconstruct his own film persona, to throwing Actual Satan into a traditional sci-fi plot, we go through the surprisingly bold decisions made by a filmmaker most known for playing it dumb, and end up with a newfound respect for the man who gave us Resident Evil. From Jerry Goldsmith's score to Treat Williams devouring the scenery at every turn, we're diving 30,000 fathoms to uncover what makes this vessel far more sea-worthy than it has any right to be, and mourn a SURPRISE cinematic universe we very nearly had. A mini-series where we put films that are commercial or critical failures under a microscope, and learn to celebrate what is there, warts and all. To kick it off, we're watching a real schlocky clunker of a problematic fave, 1999's Jamie Lee Curtis disowned, VIRUS! Robot zombie cyborgs from space, one of the lesser Baldwin brothers, Donald Sutherland putting in the weirdest performance ever, all based upon an indie comic by a fairly well regarded writer and directed by Jim Cameron's go to special effects whiz! A recipe for something special, even if it didn't quite turn out. But why didn't it? In our feature audio commentary, we get to the bottom, from production history, to structure and concept, all while giggling at some of the coolest creature effects put on film.
