THE EXORCISM

What an excellent day for filming an exorcism. THE Exorcism, in fact! And that's the closest thing to a joke you're getting, because the duo behind The Final Girls is back with another deeply personal-- and far much colder-- look at a young woman connecting with a parent in showbiz. Joshua Miller and M.A. Fortin team up with Russell Crowe and a seemingly endless list of character actors to tell the story of a newly-sober man trying to get himself on the right track by taking what could be the role of his career, the priest in a remake of a famous exorcism movie, no matter what demons from his past it may awaken. Unable to win respect at home or on set, dodging a well-intentioned holy man, a director more interested in getting a rise out of him than his acting, and an alleged "curse" that's already claimed one actor, it's the perfect environment for a man to lose himself... or be found.

Millennial Nasties + TERRIFIER 1&2 with Ariel Powers-Schaub

They're on the screens! They're in your home! They SHOULD be on your mind! Extreme cinema, exploitation, video nasties, whatever you call them, they take theaters by storm once every generation, and tonight we're wringing this moral panic for all it's worth! With the help of returning guest Ariel Powers-Schaub, the BOP Crew charts how the films detailed in her new book Millennial Nasties took inspiration from the gross-out cinema of the eighties to define the torture porn of the 2000's, before a chat about how those boundary-pushing themes are alive in the current king of modern nasties, Terrifier 2. Tangents along the way include Film Theory: Art The Clown Edition, a brief meeting of the May Canady Appreciation Society, and the secret origin of The Sham Wow Guy.

Millennial Nasties can be pre-ordered directly from Encyclopocalypse in eBook and Print at www.encyclopocalypse.com (BuyHorrorBooks.com) On on September 17th, 2024 it will also be available from your favorite bookseller. The audiobook version will be available exclusively from Audible or Apple Books.

SAW X Commentary Track

With the Oscars behind us, many are taking a second look at the remarkable stories from last year that have been tragically overlooked by the academy. Tonight, Box Office Pulp would like to spotlight one such story, that of a humble engineer who forgot to cherish the little things, until a surprise diagnosis introduced him to a new hobby, a new gal, and a new lease on life. Before he can finish his life's work, though, he must rail against an uncaring medical system and stop the exploitative business practices of a corrupt institution, or else this will be one jigsaw puzzle left unsolved! In their final BOP n' A Movie audio commentary track on the series-- until next year, sat least-- the crew have finally reached Saw X, the John/Amanda reunion America didn't know it wanted. Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith are back in the playhouse, the script is free to set up absolutely nothing for a sequel, and there's an actual budget this time around, so does the THIRD return of a franchise that doesn't believe in letting itself die finally recapture the gruesome magic fans have been longing for since the original trilogy? If the words "we have a rope" mean anything to you, then you already know the answer!

JIGSAW Commentary Track

A BOP n' A Movie commentary track? But that podcast has been dead for ten years! The only explanation can be that there's a copycat on the loose, and it's set its sights on the most vulnerable member of the Saw family: 2017's forgotten soft reboot, Jigsaw! Crank up the Roy Orbison and grab your favorite bucket, as persons unknown revisit Lionsgate's first attempt to resurrect a dead horse,  but is the only entry from The Brothers Spierig the return to simplicity they wanted? Filled with new characters, time jumps, fan sites, retcons, and more expendable detectives than you can shake a Tapp at, can one of the men who gave us Good Luck Chuck create an apprentice who will finally make John Kramer proud? Step inside the ol' Tuck Ranch and we'll have a look...

SAW VII (3D): THE FINAL CHAPTER Commentary Track

We can't say the man didn't warn us it would get bloody. Unfortunately, our plunge into America's favorite amputation-based horror franchise has brought us to this BOP n' A Tragedy commentary for Saw 7, AKA Saw 3D, AKA Saw 33⅓: The Final Insult. Opening with Jigsaw saying the name "Brad" and going downhill from there, this attempt to squeeze a few more drops of blood out of the Hoffman saga killed the franchise as we knew it, with poorly utilized 3D, a threadbare script, and a style that screams "the director only participated under threat of lawsuit." Is there anything to love about the last dance of Mark and Jill, or was too much lost in the attempt to blend two very different movies together in one hastily-constructed finale? Was finally pulling the pin on Cary Elwes worth it? Is The Final Chapter a glass coffin constructed by its own producers? Will a flashback ever reveal why John Kramer wears is hat that way? In Saw fashion, we may or may not answer any of these questions!

SAW VI Commentary Track

Like a good neighbor, cherish your life! Terrible jingle for an insurance company, but perfect for our purposes, as tonight we've gathered to milk John Kramer for every last ounce of gratitude his corpse has to offer, with this BOP n' A Movie Commentary for SAW 6! At the end of the 'Jigsaw's Last Will Trilogy' (we're naming just now), our story finds Hoffman's world crashing down around him as the Billy-slain return from the dead, janitors battle their corporate overlords for lung supremacy, and the final convoluted pieces of John's plan fall into place. Listen as we talk Tobin Bell playing the proud papa, the shift in quality from the detective-half to the game-portion, the ascension of go-to Saw director Kevin Greutert, the even higher ascension of Lionsgate's producers, the reality show whose grand prize was sharing the screen with Costas Mandylore, and Amanda's revenge from beyond the grave. Sort of. After the credits.

SAW V Commentary Track

If you're reading this, then you've finally found what you've been looking for. But is the discovery of our podcast enough? Or will your insatiable hunger for Saw films push you deeper into the abyss? Heed my warning: do not listen to this Bop n' A Movie commentary on Saw V. As your hosts watch Costas Mandylor be horror's worst cop since Matt Cordell, they discuss the lows and highs of the post-Jigsaw era, how first-time director and former cinemaSAWgrapher David Hackl handled the transition away from the Wan/Bouseman style, the push and pull between creatives and executives with notes that would go on to define the series, and just how many ways you can fail to make a torture-chamber interesting. Just listen before Det. Straum stabs him-- oh, there he goes again. Don't look, it'll just encourage him...

SAW IV Commentary Track

You think our series ends just because the newest Saw movie is out? The commentaries have only begun! In our latest BOP n' A Movie, we continue our look at horror's most complicated continuity... outside of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead, Demons... you know what, forget we said anything. In Saw IV, repo man Darren Lynn Bouseman wraps his original streak as director with a tale of origins, autopsies, and doors that should never be walked through quickly. Listen as the crew discuss the last time Saw truly looked like Saw, the missing pieces of the life of John Kramer that are laid down with mixed results, maybe the best prop corpse in movie history the rise of Hoffman, the fall of Hoffman, the Straum School of Witness Interrogation, and the original script that would've had Donnie Wahlberg stand on EVEN MORE than a block of ice.

Talking THE WELL with Federico Zampaglione

Is restoring a classic painting ever worth it? According to horror movies the answer is resoundingly "no," as you can plainly see in acclaimed director Federico Zampaglione's newest festival hit, "The Well!" Zampaglione (@Tiromancino) was kind enough to join us and talk about his love letter to the Italian cinema that shaped him, how he married a slow-burn psychological descent with shocking moments of brutality, the fortune of casting Lauren LaVera just as Terrifier fans christened her horror royalty, and working with his own daughter to produce one of the most haunting performances from a child actor in a while.

SAW III Commentary Track

Editor's Note: Mike's audio was borked and did our best to do a Lazarus on it and save the commentary. Will be jarring at first but hope we got it listenable for you. Our apologies!

With Saw X currently gouging up the theaters, we continue our ongoing social experiment against the moral integrity of Cody's liver, BOP n' A Movie! This edition's reading from The Book of BOP brings us to Saw III, Darren Lynn Bousman's sophomore turn in the director's chair and Leigh Whannell's final word on Jigsaw and all his animal friends. Avoiding the franchise's most miscast leading man at all costs, the crew discuss the surprising tenderness and hilarious cruelty of Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith as horror's homicidal Batman & Robin. Containing perhaps the highest quantity of actors too good for the third entry in a Lionsgate franchise, does this end of the original era work as the finale to a trilogy, or is it just another link in the chain? And just how much footage did they shoot of Amanda wrecking people's shit? Swallow this tiny cassette drowned in Malort and find out!

THE WELL - Mini BOP

Calling all art fans! No, not THAT Art--even if, Lauren LaVera IS in this movie. I mean of the brush stroke kind! Look at what TERROR your preferred form of expression wreaks on more, unsuspecting restorers from a foreign land! I won't hold it against you, though. I WILL hold it against you if you don't check out this here review of THE WELL! Mike is here with more new Euro Horror recommendations for your perlilous eyeballs, this one from writer and director Federico Zampaglione, with a tone and foreboding frights that harken back to the films of Lucio Fulci and Umberto Lenzi and just had its North American premiere at SCREAMFEST. Listen now to hear some quick post-watch thoughts and why YOU should keep it on your radar.

THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS Commentary Track (A Big-Ass Pumpkin Day Extravaganza)

Just when you thought it was safe to crack open a gourd, scoop out its insides, and carve your choice of expression into its helpless flesh, Big-Ass Pumpkin Day is here again! The BOP mantra has always been "when all else fails, do quality," so this year we're partying along with 2018's way-better-than-it-has-to-be The House With A Clock In Its Walls. The pumpkin juice is flowing and the Malort is conspicuously absent as we talk about this modern kid's classic directed by absolutely no one at all, hitting on the film's amazing cinematography by an industry legend, the book's heavier percentage of Axe Murderer Content, the fragile balance between jokes for kids and jokes for everyone, and the oeuvre of Jack Black's many beards. We also make fun of Eli Roth for about four minutes straight, this IS BAPD after all.

SAW II (Unrated) Commentary Track

Xavier did nothing wrong! And now that we've got your attention, welcome to the second installment of Saw n' A Movie, the commentary series that was in the safe the whole time. Spoilers. Join us as we discuss Saw II, first-time director Darren Lynn Bousman's inaugural dip into the needle-pit that would shape the franchise to this very day, and the first time America heard Tobin Bell lecture us about time management. We talk the brilliant set-design, the balancing act between traps and story the other films would struggle with, the return of Shawnee Smith as the world's first reverse-Scream Queen, and the beginnings of The Curse of Bouseman. Meanwhile, Cody continues his quest to slowly poison himself with Malort like he's the mom from Flowers In The Attic.

SAW Commentary Track

Hello, listeners. We'd like to play a commentary. If it's [MONTH TAPE IS BEING PLAYED], it must be BOP! And tonight, the crew is untangling the first knot in the increasingly convoluted horror juggernaut that is SAW, in the first of a new BOP n' A Movie commentary series! The Elwes are screaming and the Malort is flowing as they discuss the very first James Wan and Leigh Whannell joint, the ingenious filmmaking cheats that allowed an inexperienced production to both surpass expectations and accidentally create an era-defining style, the immediate pop culture royal treatment the nearly DTV film received, how the influx of Saw-alikes changed perception of the original, and how Tobin Bell getting off that floor is still shocking every goddamn time-- Spoilers. Now be a mensch and rewind that tape for the next guy, cool?

SCREAM 6

Ghostface and BOP are back, baby! After their respective hiatuses, one is here to talk about movies and the other to cut a bloody swath through New York City. We'll let you decide which is which. Regardless, The Core Four are back on the silver screen with a new masked slasher to contend with, and Mike and Cody get to gab about what may be one of their new favorite entries in the Scream franchise! Mostly importantly, though, they get to loudly declare "Kirby Lives!" with righteous indignation. So how does the sixth installment fare without series lead Sidney Prescott? What larger thesis is the film presenting? Is this the New York set slasher we've long dreamed of? All this and updates on Stu Watch 2023 in this very episode!

The Gastro Horror of THE MENU with Spooky Sarah Says

On this special Thanksgiving episode, Box Office Pastries treats you to an expertly crafted culinary experience that will leave your earbuds raving! We welcome to our kitchen guest sous-chef Sarah Stubbs of Geeks Who Eat, who has prepared an appetizer of sinful cuisine confessions. Next comes the main course, a delightful desiccation of Mark Mylod's delectable horror debut, The Menu. Our love for this satire of class, pretention, and the disregard for labor is apparent in every savory bite -- and don't you dare ask for ketchup! Next up comes the dessert, as Sarah bakes a love letter to gastro-horror, a subgenre whose entries number in the hundreds, some of them even good! Finally, once you've finished we will provide a take-home box, colloquially known as a "dog's bag," filled with after-dinner discourse on the finer points of fine dining, and the poorer points of poor punmanship. Enjoy, and we implore you, take all you want, but please eat what you take.

Found Footage (Tape 2) with Ariel Powers-Schaub

Tonight, in front of an audience of millions, the crew of Box Office Pulp will attempt something heretofore unseen on the internet! With nothing but a six-pack and our recording equipment, we are attempting to make content with "Ariel," a Midwestern cryptid known for appearing to strangers in the mist and recommending obscure found footage films. At great personal peril, we will attempt to record her feelings on the changes in technology the sub-genre has seen in recent years, the surprising appearance of found footage franchises, the many layers of reality a mockumentary can play with, why The Last Broadcast is best enjoyed by traveling back to the 2000's, and what is to be made of this "Art The Clown" business sweeping America. If this goes right, the podcasting world will never be the same! If not, we recorded a cool guest episode before being discovered in pieces. Either way, we're trending!
