Millennial Nasties + TERRIFIER 1&2 with Ariel Powers-Schaub

They're on the screens! They're in your home! They SHOULD be on your mind! Extreme cinema, exploitation, video nasties, whatever you call them, they take theaters by storm once every generation, and tonight we're wringing this moral panic for all it's worth! With the help of returning guest Ariel Powers-Schaub, the BOP Crew charts how the films detailed in her new book Millennial Nasties took inspiration from the gross-out cinema of the eighties to define the torture porn of the 2000's, before a chat about how those boundary-pushing themes are alive in the current king of modern nasties, Terrifier 2. Tangents along the way include Film Theory: Art The Clown Edition, a brief meeting of the May Canady Appreciation Society, and the secret origin of The Sham Wow Guy.

Millennial Nasties can be pre-ordered directly from Encyclopocalypse in eBook and Print at www.encyclopocalypse.com (BuyHorrorBooks.com) On on September 17th, 2024 it will also be available from your favorite bookseller. The audiobook version will be available exclusively from Audible or Apple Books.

SAW X Commentary Track

With the Oscars behind us, many are taking a second look at the remarkable stories from last year that have been tragically overlooked by the academy. Tonight, Box Office Pulp would like to spotlight one such story, that of a humble engineer who forgot to cherish the little things, until a surprise diagnosis introduced him to a new hobby, a new gal, and a new lease on life. Before he can finish his life's work, though, he must rail against an uncaring medical system and stop the exploitative business practices of a corrupt institution, or else this will be one jigsaw puzzle left unsolved! In their final BOP n' A Movie audio commentary track on the series-- until next year, sat least-- the crew have finally reached Saw X, the John/Amanda reunion America didn't know it wanted. Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith are back in the playhouse, the script is free to set up absolutely nothing for a sequel, and there's an actual budget this time around, so does the THIRD return of a franchise that doesn't believe in letting itself die finally recapture the gruesome magic fans have been longing for since the original trilogy? If the words "we have a rope" mean anything to you, then you already know the answer!

SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW Commentary Track

Tonight the C in ACAB stands for Chris Rock, as we take a look at the delayed, maligned, and overlooked soft reboot of the Saw franchise... no, the other one, 2021's Spiral: From The Book of SAW! In this Bop n' A Movie commentary track, we travel back to a time of chaos and uncertainty, where America was terrified by police brutality and the indoctrination of its youth into violent ideologies by charismatic extremists-- thank God that's over. It was a time when the horror community was shocked not just by another comedian entering the game, but by Darren Lynn Bousman's return to the series after seemingly cutting ties with Lionsgate, and the anticipated film missing its release due to a trivial complication like a global pandemic. Seen as a disappointment and forgotten by a series that keeps everything, did we miss out on a bold return to Saw's pulp roots, or does it deserve to be buried along with Jigsaw? The movie, you know, not the... well, I guess him, too.

The Humbugs of Cinema: A Christmas Carol(s) Retrospective

Old Box Office Pulp was better than its word. It returned to the well of Dickens yet again that December, to spend another holiday discussing where the adaptations of A Christmas Carol fell on the gravy-grave scale. They ranked the various Scrooges, Fezzywigs, Marleys, and infinitely more; and to Cody, who did NOT die of alcohol poisoning last commentary, there was much introspection on the logistics of employing a street urchin, the bizarre phenomenon of Scrooge Action Scenes, why Albert Finney decided to go Full Witch, whether London bookie Eddie Scrooge ever beat that murder rap, and whether the miser truly ever had become as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the movies always said. And so, as BOP Guy once observed, "Box Office Pulp hasn't felt holiday cheer since he licked a car battery and was legally dead for thirty seconds!"

SAW III Commentary Track

Editor's Note: Mike's audio was borked and did our best to do a Lazarus on it and save the commentary. Will be jarring at first but hope we got it listenable for you. Our apologies!

With Saw X currently gouging up the theaters, we continue our ongoing social experiment against the moral integrity of Cody's liver, BOP n' A Movie! This edition's reading from The Book of BOP brings us to Saw III, Darren Lynn Bousman's sophomore turn in the director's chair and Leigh Whannell's final word on Jigsaw and all his animal friends. Avoiding the franchise's most miscast leading man at all costs, the crew discuss the surprising tenderness and hilarious cruelty of Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith as horror's homicidal Batman & Robin. Containing perhaps the highest quantity of actors too good for the third entry in a Lionsgate franchise, does this end of the original era work as the finale to a trilogy, or is it just another link in the chain? And just how much footage did they shoot of Amanda wrecking people's shit? Swallow this tiny cassette drowned in Malort and find out!

SAW II (Unrated) Commentary Track

Xavier did nothing wrong! And now that we've got your attention, welcome to the second installment of Saw n' A Movie, the commentary series that was in the safe the whole time. Spoilers. Join us as we discuss Saw II, first-time director Darren Lynn Bousman's inaugural dip into the needle-pit that would shape the franchise to this very day, and the first time America heard Tobin Bell lecture us about time management. We talk the brilliant set-design, the balancing act between traps and story the other films would struggle with, the return of Shawnee Smith as the world's first reverse-Scream Queen, and the beginnings of The Curse of Bouseman. Meanwhile, Cody continues his quest to slowly poison himself with Malort like he's the mom from Flowers In The Attic.

SAW Commentary Track

Hello, listeners. We'd like to play a commentary. If it's [MONTH TAPE IS BEING PLAYED], it must be BOP! And tonight, the crew is untangling the first knot in the increasingly convoluted horror juggernaut that is SAW, in the first of a new BOP n' A Movie commentary series! The Elwes are screaming and the Malort is flowing as they discuss the very first James Wan and Leigh Whannell joint, the ingenious filmmaking cheats that allowed an inexperienced production to both surpass expectations and accidentally create an era-defining style, the immediate pop culture royal treatment the nearly DTV film received, how the influx of Saw-alikes changed perception of the original, and how Tobin Bell getting off that floor is still shocking every goddamn time-- Spoilers. Now be a mensch and rewind that tape for the next guy, cool?

SCREAM 6

Ghostface and BOP are back, baby! After their respective hiatuses, one is here to talk about movies and the other to cut a bloody swath through New York City. We'll let you decide which is which. Regardless, The Core Four are back on the silver screen with a new masked slasher to contend with, and Mike and Cody get to gab about what may be one of their new favorite entries in the Scream franchise! Mostly importantly, though, they get to loudly declare "Kirby Lives!" with righteous indignation. So how does the sixth installment fare without series lead Sidney Prescott? What larger thesis is the film presenting? Is this the New York set slasher we've long dreamed of? All this and updates on Stu Watch 2023 in this very episode!

The Gastro Horror of THE MENU with Spooky Sarah Says

On this special Thanksgiving episode, Box Office Pastries treats you to an expertly crafted culinary experience that will leave your earbuds raving! We welcome to our kitchen guest sous-chef Sarah Stubbs of Geeks Who Eat, who has prepared an appetizer of sinful cuisine confessions. Next comes the main course, a delightful desiccation of Mark Mylod's delectable horror debut, The Menu. Our love for this satire of class, pretention, and the disregard for labor is apparent in every savory bite -- and don't you dare ask for ketchup! Next up comes the dessert, as Sarah bakes a love letter to gastro-horror, a subgenre whose entries number in the hundreds, some of them even good! Finally, once you've finished we will provide a take-home box, colloquially known as a "dog's bag," filled with after-dinner discourse on the finer points of fine dining, and the poorer points of poor punmanship. Enjoy, and we implore you, take all you want, but please eat what you take.

HALLOWEEN ENDS

Fourty-four years ago, convicted murderer Michael Myers escaped from Smith Grove Sanitarium, and upon returning to his home town of Haddonfield, Illinois, committed five murders that would transform horror cinema forever. But those murders would also transform the town of Haddonfield, scarring its people with every new massacre, while an evil far more sinister than a man with a knife boiled beneath its surface. With Halloween Ends, David Gordon Green and co. wrap up both their sequel trilogy and the story of Laurie Strode with a movie nobody saw coming, and the horror community is having all kinds of feels about it. Join us as we discuss the good, bad, and weird of the most polarizing franchise movie since... the last big franchise movie, whether or not Michael is actually a car, and where the legend of The Shape can go when the corpse of this series is eventually unearthed to terrorize a new generation.

THE BLACK PHONE

From the ashes of a Raimi-less Doctor Strange sequel from another multiverse comes Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill's exemplary adaptation of Joe Hill's THE BLACK PHONE, which gifts us a new horror icon in Ethan Hawke's THE GRABBER and some of the best child performances since IT! Cody and Mike ring up some ghosts themselves to dive into the 70s trappings, heady themes, the ways Derrickson and Cargill expand and improve the short tale, and for some reason debate whether or not the LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT remake should have included the chainsaw massacre or not.

THE BATMAN

TO THE BOX OFFICE PULP SUBSCRIBERS. From your favorite podcasters. Who? Haven't a clue. Sit down with your Batzonie and let us review. The time has come for the world's only good billionaire to get a fresh start, but after a decade of full-on Batmania, is it possible to give us a truly fresh take on one of the longest-running characters in American fiction? Along the way they dissect Robert Pattinson's surprisingly nuanced take on a role not known for subtlety, chart the meteoric rise of Oz Cobblepot, ponder the ethics of observing Zoe Kravitz, mishear Nirvana lyrics, and nerd-out about the one Batman movie they never thought could get made.

DUNE (2021) Commentary Track

As they say on Salusa Secundus, Cody's dreams are messages from the derp. *insert horrible god language* And if any of that nonsense sounded familiar, then boy do we have three hours for you! Damn your own personal spice as you join Baron Cody Drinkonnen, Michael'Dib, and Euphoria's Zendaya as Jami, while they record a BOP n' A Movie thought unrecordable on the film thought unfilmable! Battling public apathy, a pandemic, and production woes longer than most cast members have been alive, Denis Villeneuve's Frank Herbert's Dune: Part One had no reason to be the surprise hit it was, and the crew spend this commentary discussing the ways this story of political corruption, environmental disorder, and an existing order crumbling under the weight of insurrection just might have struck a cord witb people! Along their journey through the desert they touch on the ground-breaking effects work, the polarizing sex appeal of the Kwisatz Haderach, and Duncan Idaho cuckolding the Tyrant God of Arrakis.

THE BLACK CAT (1934) Commentary Track

Hjalmar Poelzig thought he had it all: the career, the house, the wife. Then, a face from the past came through his door: Vitus, a widowed psychiatrist who thought he'd lost his last chance at love. With a visit from the boss right around the corner, Hjalmar can't afford any mishaps, but Vitus, a pair of amorous newlyweds, and a meddlesome cat have other plans! Join the BOP Crew this Valentine's Day as they deliver a commentary track for the outrageous pre-code  romance, Universal's The Black Cat. Set in a backdrop of war and intrigue, featuring the first pairing of the Hanks and Ryan of the 30's, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, this hour-long goth rollercoaster is jam-packed with everything you could want from old Hollywood. Listen to the BOPolytes dig deep into the expressionist set design, the career-highlight performances from two horror heavies, the whitest man alive, all before falling victim to the sex appeal of a shirtless, satanic Karloff.

SCREAM (2022)

Ring. Ring. What’s your favorite scary movie? If the answer isn’t an entry in the SCREAM franchise, then we don’t want you to live anyway! It’s been years since the last entry and we have since lost the legendary Wes Craven, but the incredible talents known as RADIO SILENCE concocted a legacy requel/sequel/satire that not only honored the maestro, but carried on his and Kevin Williamson’s influence. Mike and Cody stab their way through the newest tale of Woodsboro’s infamous Ghostface killa, SCREAM (5)!

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

Face front and queue up your Bully Maguire memes, true subscribers! In an uncertain world, one of life's few guarantees is a new Spider-Man movie, and it's getting increasingly hard to separate that character from the vast legacy behind him. Thankfully, pop culture's recent obsession with the multiverse (of madness!) has given Peter Parker another opportunity to confront his greatest nemesis: Peter Parker! And also the Green Goblin. Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home bites off more than any film should be able to chew, with Spidey facing the fallout of Mysterio's final dick move, a perilous team-up with Doctor Strange, a gauntlet against the dimension-hopping Sinister Six-Minus-One, and a serious case of space envy from his peers. And the Green Goblin's there. How can a movie stand as a sequel to ELEVEN films, across multiple generations, and still carve out its own unique place in the mythology? Because anything is possible in a universe that contains Willem Dafoe.

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL Commentary Track

2021 was dead, to begin with. Dead as a doornail. And to lay it to rest, we've embarked on a most joyous recording: a commentary track for the beloved The Muppet Christmas Carol, cherished by many a soul as the best adaptation since Charles Dickens first put quill to parchment. Our brothers in felt's first outing after the death of Jim Henson, this holiday classic boasts career-highlight performances from Michael Caine, Steve Whitmire, and Rizzo The Rat as Himself. But did it hold a candle to the Scrooge chronicles before and after? And would the BOP Crew be able to reflect on childhood nostalgia, Muppet politics, and the  evergreen social relevance of the story before the brisk runtime was at an end? If you can step over the beer bottles Cody is dragging behind him, sit an evening with us and we'll tell you the tale!

Crisis on Infinite Nights He Came Home: The Many Timelines of Michael Myers

Death has come to our little podcast. We can either ignore it, confront it, or choose our own version to stare down as we shout SIX TIMES! at it. For this episode, we discuss the night HE came home... or is it the night HE continued being home? Or, wait, was it the night HE came home ten years later? Twenty years later? FORTY years later? Resurrected? Out to return? For revenge? Quite frankly, we're not sure what’s going on with serial slasher and mechanic coverall enthusiast Michael Myers of the famed HALLOWEEN franchise, but we're putting our best tan trench coats on and figuring it out, tackling the many differing timelines of the horror series and what’s unique and occasionally broken about each!

Mini BOP - SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS

It's time to scream the lyrics to Hotel California incoherently at some Razor Fisted assassins, because the BOP Crew is harnessing the power of magical microphones found in a cave thousands of years ago in order to gush about Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings! The kung-fu/superhero/fantasy we didn't know we always wanted. Simu Liu, Tony Leung, and Still Going By Awkwafina round out Marvel Studio's best cast in years, but are they given the screen time they deserve, or  is this a roster of Koraths and Malakeths? And is there anything at all to Death Dealer besides the cool mask? What's pulled from the 70s comics and what's been left on the problematic curb? You'll find out the answers at our side, dear listener. Oh, thank God you're real.
