THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS Commentary Track (A Big-Ass Pumpkin Day Extravaganza)

Just when you thought it was safe to crack open a gourd, scoop out its insides, and carve your choice of expression into its helpless flesh, Big-Ass Pumpkin Day is here again! The BOP mantra has always been "when all else fails, do quality," so this year we're partying along with 2018's way-better-than-it-has-to-be The House With A Clock In Its Walls. The pumpkin juice is flowing and the Malort is conspicuously absent as we talk about this modern kid's classic directed by absolutely no one at all, hitting on the film's amazing cinematography by an industry legend, the book's heavier percentage of Axe Murderer Content, the fragile balance between jokes for kids and jokes for everyone, and the oeuvre of Jack Black's many beards. We also make fun of Eli Roth for about four minutes straight, this IS BAPD after all.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! Commentary Track

Looks like the BOP Crew has solved another mystery, and the culprit is... Old Man Zaslav?! Of course, he wanted to scare everyone away so he could look for  those antique coins buried under the old Warner Bros. backlot! Well, with Hollywood saved, let's head on down to Coolsville, throw on our pumpkin suits, and celebrate with a BOP n' A Movie commentary for the hungry dog's latest-- Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! For the second year in a row, a DTV Scooby-Doo movie is shocking high-quality, with jokes that would be at home on Venture Bros, the best animation the long-running series has ever seen, and a historic first in Coco Diablo: Villainess, fashion designer, and... canon love interest for Velma? Did James Gunn write this? All this and awkward shaving talk, just in time for the spookiest month of the year, November! Seriously, read a history book, Thanksgiving is horrifying, kids.

So why is the composer so often overlooked when we share our love for these classics? On this episode we welcome to the show author and podcast host J. Mini BOP: DARK GLASSES

Just when you thought it was safe to walk the darkened streets of Italy with a bare throat, Dario Argento is BACK! And he's sporting gloved hands and a killer pair of DARK GLASSES. Which, of course, happens to be the name of his new movie in a very, very long time. Even longer if you don't want to count his last movie as a movie. But, thanks to Shudder, we get a chance to see the legend return to his simplistic giallo roots and ring in the month of October the right way. How does this newest tale of murder fare against his many classics? Is it a return to form? Can we all just pretend Dracula 3D didn't happen? All this and more answered by yours Ghoul-y, Mike!

THIR13EN GHOSTS Commentary Track

Cheers from beyond the grave, folks! William S. Castle, Jr. here, warning you of the latest advancement in spook technology destined to turn the podCastle world upside-down! You may THINK you've seen the 2001 remake of my beloved Thir13en Ghosts, but you can't call yourself a cinephile until you've experienced it in COMMENT-O-SCOPE. Do you dare listen to this BOP n' A Tragedy commentary track, as your thr3e hosts explore their love/hate/love relationship with Scott Beck's disorienting cult classic? Some say this haunted house ride of a film paved the road that Dark Castle and others would follow for a decade, but can YOU walk the same path, dodging knife-wielding beauties, plus-sized babies, and spasming Matthew Lillards? The faint of heart need not worry, though, if the secrets of the Black Zodiac are too much for you, just press the "PANIC" button on your seat, and you'll be escorted to our NPR Corner, where you can listen to harmless shows more befitting a... well, I'M not going to say it! Now where is that skeleton waiter with my vodka and boo-bon?

Crisis on Infinite Nights He Came Home: The Many Timelines of Michael Myers

Death has come to our little podcast. We can either ignore it, confront it, or choose our own version to stare down as we shout SIX TIMES! at it. For this episode, we discuss the night HE came home... or is it the night HE continued being home? Or, wait, was it the night HE came home ten years later? Twenty years later? FORTY years later? Resurrected? Out to return? For revenge? Quite frankly, we're not sure what’s going on with serial slasher and mechanic coverall enthusiast Michael Myers of the famed HALLOWEEN franchise, but we're putting our best tan trench coats on and figuring it out, tackling the many differing timelines of the horror series and what’s unique and occasionally broken about each!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, SCOOBY-DOO! Commentary Track (A Big-Ass Pumpkin Day Extravaganza)

You walk out onto an unfamiliar street, your legs doing the thinking for you. The chill steals the last remnants of warmth from your breath, turning it to a cool mist before your eyes. It's dark, as dark as it gets, but even so there are shadows, long and threatening, cast by nothing at all. As it strikes you how improbable that is, you hear the children, unseen but approaching, the clatter of their hurried footsteps nearly drowning out their endless, maddening chant: "Come on, Scooby, where you been? Trouble's on the loose again." It is Big-Ass Pumpkin Day, and no God or demon can deliver you from the jaws of celebration. So why don'tcha pop on the BOP Crew's commentary for this season's surprise gem, Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo? Join Mike, Cody, and the rest as they uncover the secrets of Einstein's Fridge, marvel at the lengths a kid's cartoon will go to to keep Elvira dirty, and curse the name of the most arch Scarecrow to never interact with Batman. Has the creator of The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy done the unthinkable and directed the perfect Scooby-Doo movie? Is Daphne the secret MVP of Mystery, Inc? Are Velma and Bill Nye the power couple America needs? Does anyone remember that SCOOB came out this year? Well you better find out soon, because the children have arrived, and they are carrying you off to the burning woods on the outskirts of town. Wait, there aren't woods on the outskirts of your town, those are... NO... NOOOOOO! They are singing a new chant now. They are chanting their master's name. And in the darkness, It declares this a Big-Ass, Big-Ass Pumpkin Day indeed...

TRICK 'r TREAT Commentary Track

During the spookiest time of the year, there are a few guidelines all horror fans should follow. Always check if there's a Blumhouse release out, never go to a stranger's home to see their VHS collection, and NEVER watch alone. I see you're ready to pop in the 2009 anthology Trick r' Treat tonight, but not so fast, Timmy! You want to let The BOP Crew check that movie for razor-blades, so give this BOP n' A Movie audio commentary a listen first! Our Samhain Specialists are here to explore how Michael Dougherty's directorial debut showcases the holiday in all of its forms, from the innocence of youthful corpse-carving to the romance of your first werewolf transformation. Along the way, they'll unwrap the SFX techniques that span generations of film-making, the balancing act of conflicting tones it pulls off effortlessly, the questionable decisions of a studio that tried to bury it at every turn, and the complex motivations of Leslie Bibb in a robot costume. And after they're done, you'll have so many delicious razor-blades left over for some tricking of your own!

THE PUMPKIN KARVER Commentary Track (A Big-Ass Pumpkin Day Extravaganza)

Get out your knife and a really big spoon, because it's the only day of the year the BOP Crew looks forward to more than Halloween: The Great Gourdening, Dia de los Calabaza itself, Big-Ass Pumpkin Day! And to properly prepare for the festivities, we suggest you put on a slasher so obscure it makes you think "Wow, Amy Weber and Minka Kelly are really slumming it," THE PUMPKIN KARVER! Mix together this year's BAPD Cocktail, and listen to Cody, Mike, and Jamie get lost in the dangerous world of expert pumpkin carving.  Then grab your own pump', cut a full circle around the top, leaving plenty of room for scooping. Once the ole' orange-boy is hollow, draw your desired Jack-O onto the gourd with a a black marker, and carefully remove the desired pieces in a gentle, see-saw motion. Just don't carve with any evil in your heart! But also don't be afraid to go crazy, Jack's a versatile dude!  Around this time, the Crew should be lost in a terrifying alternate reality where the pumpkins have come to take back what's their's. Set your new friend on the couch next to you, down a good swig of that BOPtail that's been gathering dust. After this, absolutely nothing will matter and you'll be in the perfect mindset for Karver's respectable FX budget and dedication to patch-based horror. Take another sip.  Ahh. It truly was a Big-Ass, Big-Ass Pumpkin Day.

Everybody now! Sing along and download here!

LADY IN WHITE: A Nightmare & Schlockscapes Spotlight

Welcome to Nightmares and Schlockscapes, where movies that go bump in the night are dragged from beneath your bed and into the spotlight. The Gothic classics of yesteryear, the bodacious B-grades, and those celluloid chillers best watched through your fingers.

A great equalizer among cultures, small towns, and tight-knit communities throughout the world are the multitudes of fables and folklore that spring up within them. Some vastly different from one another, but many share surprisingly common traits. One such locality specific legend centers around a ghostly apparition known by the moniker "The Lady In White," and it feels like there's nary a quietly quaint town that doesn't have their own. But growing up in Rochester, New York, Writer-Director Frank LaLoggia knew only of one: The White Lady who roamed Durand-Eastman Park, never at rest, searching for her murdered daughter. A tragically lovelorn concept that LaLoggia recontextualizes, and builds upon, for his 1988 ghost tale, LADY IN WHITE. A stark, contemplative gem that was drowned out among it's more chaotic and rock n' roll horror brethren usually found in cinemas.

When Good Ghouls Go Bad Commentary Track (A Big-Ass Pumpkin Day Celebration!)

Spit out your candy corn and put down your carving knives, because it's that time of year again! No, not that time of year! The other time of year, where the mighty Pumpkin lords over all that encounter it! It's another festive installment of (Big Ass) Big Ass Pumpkin Day, and the BOP crew once again has you covered for all things spooky and ooky. Perhaps even kooky? Madness, you may say, but the film we're watching this year represents everything that BAPD symbolizes: fake mummies, the titular giant pumpkins, and of course, a zombified Christopher Lloyd! It's The Big Ass Pumpkin Day presentation of the FOX Family original movie, WHEN GOOD GHOULS GO BAD. Featuring a live pumpkin carving by Cody! We're not joking. He... he really did that.

BOP Revisits: Halloween (1978)

Or, "The Shape Of Horror: What John Carpenter's Halloween Still Has To Teach The Genre"

I thought we outgrew superstition. True, stating that is mostly a riff on a line spoken by Jamie Lee Curtis in one of the most iconic horror films of all time, John Carpenter's 1978 "Halloween", but there's a quality about the film that actively works towards keeping the idea of what superstition can be fully and vibrantly alive - and it's fascinating that, all these years later, there's still a natural element to be found in what basically amounts to a story about an asylum escapee randomly targeting a bunch of teenagers against the backdrop of a holiday. On paper, it sounds relatively dull and overly simplistic. Definitely not what you'd consider "horrific" or even intrinsically scary. And when you learn more about the movie, you find all of these elements that really shouldn't work. It was made for just over 300 thousand dollars by a studio that didn't really believe in it. It was written by a couple of twenty-somethings who only had one film to their credentials. It was made in the late 1970's, well beyond the point of becoming outdated and losing it's impact. The point is that when you think about it on a basic conceptual level, nothing about Halloween should be considered worthy of the praise that's still heaped upon it very nearly 40 years since it's release.

And yet, Halloween stands above a myriad of successors, imitators, ripoffs, and pretenders to the throne it never intended to build for itself. Much like Steven Spielberg's Jaws or James Cameron's The Terminator, Carpenter's Halloween is among a select few of horror movies - or hell, movies in general - that transcend their own limitations built on by time and the advancements of how to make movies, how artistic interpretations and tastes change, and ultimately what makes a horror film scary according to modern sensibilities. Halloween is a slow burn build to a night of realistic horror that can't be achieved with ghosts or demons, yet it's got a subtle infusion of the supernatural that keeps it from playing like a docudrama. It features believable protagonists that aren't stereotypes, aren't played to be unlikeable and worth killing off, and really develop naturally over the course of the film. In most cases, the characters don't even feel like characters. You feel like you're watching people go about their day only to have this nightmare scenario unfold and entrap them before they can even be made aware of it. You don't get the "sting" that's been played out a hundred times of every character reacting to a scare, you just get it once, maybe twice in total.

But... why is that so effective?

JACK-O Commentary Track (A Big-Ass Pumpkin Day Celebration)

The smell of pumpkin-spice everything is in the air, the leaves are changing color, and Big-Ass Pumpkin Day celebrations are blooming nationwide! (Well, maybe not that last one, but we’re working on it.) To kick off BAPD 2015, the Box Office Pulp crew provided a live commentary on the torturous 1995 monster movie JACK-O. Boasting an IMDb score of 2.7, you know it has to be good! (No. No it’s not.) But to save our sanities, we used the time to develop a much better movie. Can you say “post-apocalyptic world populated by Jason Voorhees' and clans of final girls”?

Join the seasonal festivities by downloading the commentary right here!
