SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

Face front and queue up your Bully Maguire memes, true subscribers! In an uncertain world, one of life's few guarantees is a new Spider-Man movie, and it's getting increasingly hard to separate that character from the vast legacy behind him. Thankfully, pop culture's recent obsession with the multiverse (of madness!) has given Peter Parker another opportunity to confront his greatest nemesis: Peter Parker! And also the Green Goblin. Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home bites off more than any film should be able to chew, with Spidey facing the fallout of Mysterio's final dick move, a perilous team-up with Doctor Strange, a gauntlet against the dimension-hopping Sinister Six-Minus-One, and a serious case of space envy from his peers. And the Green Goblin's there. How can a movie stand as a sequel to ELEVEN films, across multiple generations, and still carve out its own unique place in the mythology? Because anything is possible in a universe that contains Willem Dafoe.

Mini BOP - SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS

It's time to scream the lyrics to Hotel California incoherently at some Razor Fisted assassins, because the BOP Crew is harnessing the power of magical microphones found in a cave thousands of years ago in order to gush about Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings! The kung-fu/superhero/fantasy we didn't know we always wanted. Simu Liu, Tony Leung, and Still Going By Awkwafina round out Marvel Studio's best cast in years, but are they given the screen time they deserve, or  is this a roster of Koraths and Malakeths? And is there anything at all to Death Dealer besides the cool mask? What's pulled from the 70s comics and what's been left on the problematic curb? You'll find out the answers at our side, dear listener. Oh, thank God you're real.

BLACK WIDOW

This episode has many, many pockets. Each pocket filled with more and more thoughts on Marvel's BLACK WIDOW! At long last, since being the best thing in Iron Man 2, battling an insane comic book publisher President that didn't want a movie starring a girl, and constantly being delayed by a global pandemic, Scarlett Johansson and Natasha Romanoff finally gets her epic day on the silver screen and we have joy to share! Along with breakdowns of the dark themes the film has no qualms with tackling, Cate Shortland's superb direction, and most importantly... Red freakin' Guardian.

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE Commentary Track

He's the best at what he does, unfortunately, what he does in no way involves the power to tell Tom Rothman "no." The BOP Crew reaches the zenith of X-Men Generation One in our X-Retrospective series, along with the zenith of late 2000s 20th Century Fox Tom-foolery (see what we did there?). This is our audio commentary for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, a film meant to kickstart a spin-off series of Origin titles, be Gavin Hood's big break, the start of a (very) different Deadpool, plus many other incredibly broken promises. Instead, a writer's strike, producer and executive arguments, conflicting ideals, last minute changes, the entire film being leaked onto the internet, and a myriad of other problems forever altered an R-rated revenge tale about Logan's war-torn PTSD into... well, you've seen it. Certainly a Tragedy!

X-MEN 3: THE LAST STAND Commentary Track

Audiences and third films. They have long struggled to co-exist, with studios stretching directors to the point of burnout, and others choosing new blood to handle the ballooning budgets and ravenous expectations. Neither strategy has prevailed, and X-Men: The Last Stand exists as a monument to this riddle so few can solve. Join BOP n' A Movie as we move into Tragedy territory on the third leg of our X-Men commentary series, dissecting one of the most infamous disappointments of the 2000's, a film so poorly-received it was held partially responsible for "killing" the superhero movie before the MCU began printing money. 20th Century Fox (RIP) was a very different company in 2006, and the road that led to us becoming Juggernaut's bitch is strewn with false starts, corporate betrayals, message board tea-spilling, greed, addiction, and even more troubles in the Job-like existence of James Marsden. But underneath the jump-cuts and the botched story-lines, is there a solid X-Men story hiding out at Magneto's Summer Camp? Throw on that uniform that's a size too small and avoid getting your fur caught in the zipper, because you're about to find out!

X2: X-MEN UNITED Commentary Track

Escalation. Since the discovery of the formula, superhero movies have known it to be the secret to their survival. The debate rages: Do audiences want more action and a grander scale the second time around, or a more personal experience with these characters? Either way, it is a historical fact: X2: X-Men United had it both ways. The academy's sophomore outing attempted to adapt God Loves, Man Kills, delve into Wolverine's origins at Weapon X, unravel a presidential assassination conspiracy, set up the Dark Phoenix Saga, AND be a sequel to the original film, and by some miracle of mutation it all worked out. In BOP n' A Movie's second installment of our X-Men commentary series, we examine how this jam-packed screenplay updates the mutant metaphor for the Bush era, and how its structure gave us the blueprint for the modern team-up movie, before we wonder at the Munich circus's own Incredible Nightcrawler, witness the origin of Michael Dougherty, and once again lament how little James Marsden has to do.

X-MEN Commentary Track

Comic book movies: The key to multi-media empires. It has enabled us to view men in rubber suits punching penguin-men, spandex-clad alien visitors turning back time, and Shaq attempting to act. But every few decades, comic book movies leap forward. With the impending release of NEW MUTANTS, the final in-continuity film in the franchise that changed the course of action cinema and cemented a genre into the pop culture zeitgeist, the BOP Crew is celebrating where it all began with a trip down Mutant Lane, going deep and introspective on the X-MEN franchise! It's a BOP 'n A Movie X-TRAVAGANZA! In the first feature audio commentary of the series, we travel back to humble beginnings in the year 2000, where the superhero had died in a blaze of Bat nipples and ice puns, ready to be re-birthed with a new purview of what the genre could be. The world was ready for the mutant metaphor and something new and strange. It's the film that changed comics, movies, and made Toad a household name, this is X-MEN!

What happens to a Toad when it's struck by lightning? Find out by downloading the commentary here!

Mini BOP - VENOM

The nineties were a grand ole' time if you were a geeky kid. An era ruled by a wise and fair Macho King, all your favorite characters co-existed in ice cream form, and an invasion of bigger, badder, and extrem-ier anti-heroes hit comics like a flaming-hot meteor, and cooled off just as quickly. Over thirty years since his creation, VENOM has not only outlived the trends that birthed him, but thrived -- much to the chagrin of the same readers who were his first fans. In Eddie Brock's film debut (we don't talk about Spider-Man 3), Ruben Fleischer and co. have not only paid shockingly faithful tribute to the nerd world's #1 problematic fave, they've chucked the macho doom-and-gloom for an upbeat romp about a boy and his blob. So why all the hate? In this Mini BOP, Symbiotic Experts Mike and Jamie weigh in on fans' curious relationship with the character, the one-of-a-kind tone that sets it apart from a sub-genre aching for experimentation, where this ranks in the annals of Weird Tom Hardy Performances, and how Venom is 100% a queer romantic-comedy. CHANGE OUR MINDS.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME

In today's troubling world, we need real heroes now more than ever. That's why we're glad to report that a new icon has risen to inspire America in its darkest hour: Mysterio, the star of Marvel's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Listen to us rave about how Jake Gyllenhaal brings the iconic inter-dimensional traveler known as Mysterio to life, the surprisingly relevant themes his character represents, and what the developments he brings to the table mean for both Spider-Man and the MCU at large. In a world where Into The Spider-Verse exists, what does this movie do to step out of the shadow of a cultural touchstone, and how does it all, in the end, come down to Mysterio? Only by listening can the truth be found!

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Commentary Track

Okay, let's try this again: This is BOP n' A Movie, and we're not the only podcast doing a commentary for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse anymore. Not by a long-shot. We are, however, the only one with drink-mixing segments, and that's something! Listen to the pod-slingers discuss this movie's surprisingly deep themes of identity and multiculturalism, its one-of-a-kind animation style, and how it wove together disparate threads from a dozen comic sources to make what may be the perfect superhero movie. Do we still find time to thirst over a cartoon pig? Of course. But what makes us stupid... is what makes us qualified to talk about Spider-Man.

Mini BOP - CAPTAIN MARVEL

The BOP Crew are going Higher, Further, AND, dare we say, Faster, in this bite-sized episode where we fanboy and fangirl out over CAPTAIN MARVEL! The first (finally) female-fronted Marvel flick that is allll about that swagger. We discuss the interesting choice of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck as directors and how it paid off huge for the studio, giving us both a rousing space-buddy-adventure throwback and focused character study; Brie Larson's star-making turn in which she pitch perfectly brings Carol Danvers to life; how Ben Mendelsohn is straight up Skrullin; MCU connections; and, of course, we make fun of lame dudes on the internet who review bombed the movie and laugh at their failures.

BLADE 2

You have no idea what podcast you are [messing] with! If that censored for TV version of a badass one-liner didn't tip you off, we're continuing our trip down bloody memory lane with our BLADE series retrospective, and we've reached the main course: Guillermo Del Toro's BLADE 2! In which, this time, our fave Daywalker must team-up with Ron Perlman and his cool vampire buddies to stop some vagina mouthed mutant bloodsuckers. There's other vagina stuff, too. Also, things in jars. Lots of things in jars. All the Del Toro staples are here, folks! Plus, Norman Reedus! So, how has the character of Blade evolved between entries? What makes Nomak one of the best villains in comic filmdom? Why isn't the fact Donnie Yen was totally a vampire ninja once brought up more!? The BOP Crew is here to answer these questions the Del Toro way -- with a graphic autopsy!

BLADE

Some podcasts are always trying to ice skate uphill. But, thanks to SPF9000, the BOP Crew can Walk like a Daywalker to sink their fangs into all things BLADE! On this anniversary year for the Marvel movie that started it all, we're taking a look back at how a niche' goggle sporting Tomb of Dracula character became the baddest mother fu*ker on the planet. All the strengths of the action-horror genre, none of the weaknesses! Beginning with the time the writer of David Hasselhoff's Nick Fury TV movie and an untested British director teamed with that guy from Major League to burst the jugular vein of cinema, with 1998's BLADE.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Dread it. Run from it. This episode still arrives. The BOP Crew have used the Eye of Agamotto to view 300,605 versions of this episode. We stay on topic for exactly... one. Good news! That's the one we're releasing, so you get all the spoilers, all the tears, and all the insane theories! What has this grand experiment in cinematic storytelling wrought? Mostly praise for how enthralling and filled with pathos THANOS of all characters is, but also a look into how the Russo Brothers pulled off the hat trick of living up to hype and showing off what the MCU is capable of with ten years behind it. After the Malekith's, Killian's, and Yellow Jacket's of the world, is it really a villain's story that becomes the perfect summation of the MCU thus far? It's AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR time, folks!

Masters of the Cinematic Universe

Do you think this is the only movie podcast in the world? You've downloaded part of a bigger universe... you just don't know it yet. Unrelated to those ominous words, this episode sees The Crew taking a look at Hollywood's current obsession with the shared cinematic universe. Why does Marvel have such a monopoly on the concept, and what essential part of the equation are studios missing? What can be gained from such a complicated endeavor, and how have creators pulled off such feats in the past? And for God's sake, will Cody ever get over The Mummy? No. No, he will not. It's The Mummy.

Spider-Man Homecoming

The BOP Crew wants to talk about Spider-Man Homecoming but they just can't get the podcast to deactivate kill mode! OH GOD WATCH OUT. Well, now that the murder is out of the way, we can tell you that we have the uncanny ability to discuss Spider-Man and Spider-Man related things way too much, so add that on top of how gosh darn excellent Homecoming is, both as a Spidey film and a film in general -- well, you're in for a doozy, folks. We can and WILL do whatever a Spider can! Which means ruining our lives by being burdened with an over-inflated sense of responsibility. But hey, you get a movie podcast out of it.

Join us as we explore the HEART of Kraglin, the balls on James Gunn to do literally anything he chose to do with this film, Kurt Russell's giant space-face, and our lamentation on just how wrong we were about StarFox being Star-Lord's dad.
