THE BATMAN

TO THE BOX OFFICE PULP SUBSCRIBERS. From your favorite podcasters. Who? Haven't a clue. Sit down with your Batzonie and let us review. The time has come for the world's only good billionaire to get a fresh start, but after a decade of full-on Batmania, is it possible to give us a truly fresh take on one of the longest-running characters in American fiction? Listen as the BOP Crew discuss The Batman, Matt Reeves' three-hour love letter to Gotham City that sets out to plumb every unexplored depth this world has. Along the way they dissect Robert Pattinson's surprisingly nuanced take on a role not known for subtlety, chart the meteoric rise of Oz Cobblepot, ponder the ethics of observing Zoe Kravitz, mishear Nirvana lyrics, and nerd-out about the one Batman movie they never thought could get made.

Mini BOP - HALLOWEEN KILLS

It seems we’re entitled to yet another good scare as The BOP Crew forms a mob to discuss the latest entry in Michael Myers’ Life Story. No, not the old life story, the new life story. As one of the most divisive sequels in the franchise slashes cinema and streaming screens everywhere, we tackle heady spoiler territory, the deeper themes at play, what it adds to Michael and the ramifications thereof, plus why the discourse might be so controversial. All in all we discover, once and for all, that yes indeed... HALLOWEEN KILLS.

Mini BOP - SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS

It's time to scream the lyrics to Hotel California incoherently at some Razor Fisted assassins, because the BOP Crew is harnessing the power of magical microphones found in a cave thousands of years ago in order to gush about Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings! The kung-fu/superhero/fantasy we didn't know we always wanted. Simu Liu, Tony Leung, and Still Going By Awkwafina round out Marvel Studio's best cast in years, but are they given the screen time they deserve, or  is this a roster of Koraths and Malakeths? And is there anything at all to Death Dealer besides the cool mask? What's pulled from the 70s comics and what's been left on the problematic curb? You'll find out the answers at our side, dear listener. Oh, thank God you're real.

R.L. STINE'S FEAR STREET TRILOGY (1994, 1978, 1666)

Childhood friends Mike and Cody, along with the girl next door Jamie, had the perfect summer job: Hosting the local radio station's movie analysis show. That was, until they met a trilogy whose secrets would not be so easily uncovered: R.L. Stine's Fear Street! Inspired by the proto-Goosebumps all the cool kids were reading, director Leigh Janiak's multi-era, genre-spanning horror epic is a haunted house of twists, turns, and questionable character choices. Will they survive the experience long enough to tell tale of its grisly kills, shockingly sincere love story, and unique take on slasher conventions? Or will they be banished to watch Haunting Hour reruns until Christmas break?

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME

In today's troubling world, we need real heroes now more than ever. That's why we're glad to report that a new icon has risen to inspire America in its darkest hour: Mysterio, the star of Marvel's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Listen to us rave about how Jake Gyllenhaal brings the iconic inter-dimensional traveler known as Mysterio to life, the surprisingly relevant themes his character represents, and what the developments he brings to the table mean for both Spider-Man and the MCU at large. In a world where Into The Spider-Verse exists, what does this movie do to step out of the shadow of a cultural touchstone, and how does it all, in the end, come down to Mysterio? Only by listening can the truth be found!

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (2019)

History (and Hollywood) can't help but show, again and again, how nature points out the folly of man, and usually it's with a giant, radioactive, morally-ambiguous lizard beating the ever loving snot out of some monsters. Now THAT'S an environmental lesson we can all get behind! It's been many a years since Gareth Edwards rose a new Americanized big budget Godzilla from the depths. It may not have been perfect, but with the release of Michael Dougherty's damn fine roller-coaster ride of a sequel, it is the perfect cinematic equivalent of "I set 'em up, you knock 'em down!" And boy, did Dougherty knock 'em down! Aided by one hell of a cast, some killer effects, new and fascinating allegories, a surprisingly engaging human story, and more Monster Zero and Mothra action than you can shake a Rodan at,  GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is a Kaiju slug-fest that all others should bow down to! I mean, Rodan definitely will, but he'll bow to a startling breeze. So, with a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound, pull some high-tension wires down with us as we dissect the intricacies of this Toho love letter!

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Commentary Track

Okay, let's try this again: This is BOP n' A Movie, and we're not the only podcast doing a commentary for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse anymore. Not by a long-shot. We are, however, the only one with drink-mixing segments, and that's something! Listen to the pod-slingers discuss this movie's surprisingly deep themes of identity and multiculturalism, its one-of-a-kind animation style, and how it wove together disparate threads from a dozen comic sources to make what may be the perfect superhero movie. Do we still find time to thirst over a cartoon pig? Of course. But what makes us stupid... is what makes us qualified to talk about Spider-Man.

BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III Commentary Track

Through these adventures the space time continuum has been mucked up, fixed, mucked up and fixed again! This time though (see what I did there?), there's something far more perilous in store... the grossness of the Old West. THE WATER IS BROWN. But that ew, aside, our BOP 'n A Movie series examining The Back To The Future Trilogy has reached the teased conclusion, and while Part 2 famously dug deep into time travel shenanigans and big sci-fi stakes, the final entry scaled it all back, sticking to a singular adventure and making the stakes personal for our time-displaced heroes in a tale about growth, love, and how Tom Wilson is probably the greatest actor who's ever lived and dammit why don't we talk about that more!? Saddle up, make yourself some Wake-Up Juice, and watch along with us for this feature audio commentary for what is, un-ironically, one of the best Western's ever produced... BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 3!

BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II Commentary Track

Nobody calls this podcast chicken! NOBODY! You can call us fashionable, though. What, with our double ties and all. But, enough about neck accessories, our special BOP 'n A Movie series is blasting off into the future, the alternate present, and back to the past, for the next entry in the beloved trilogy -- BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 2! Featuring the first appearance of President Trump. Sigh. But, that unfortunate prediction aside, it also features one of the most interesting uses of time travel in a story, ever... even if it is to it's own detriment. We dig into topics such as production history, the thought process that went into breaking the story, why said story is kind of broken, it's approach to future design, Zemeckis' push to do things totally unique, why you gotta respect Part 2 at the end of the day, and the sad, sad story of replacement George McFly. So, if you got the POWAH - along with a copy of the movie - join us for this feature audio commentary!

BACK TO THE FUTURE Commentary Track

Once this podcast hits 88mph, you're going to hear some serious sh*t. The Crew have bashed their skulls in and had a vision! A picture in their head! And it's a special BOP 'n A Movie series powered by 1.21 Gigawatts! So, if you've managed to narrowly avoid sleeping with your mother AND narrowly avoided being gunned down by some terrorists you bamboozled, please join us as we set our DeLorean for 1985, 1955, 2015, alternate 1985, and 1885, to provide to you these feature audio commentaries for each of ole' Doc Brown and Marty McFly's adventures! Starting right here with the film that changed a cultural landscape, the Steven Spielberg produced, Robert Zemeckis directed, cinematic classic -- BACK TO THE FUTURE! Exactly how much about the nuts and bolts of this touchstone have we all overlooked? Breaking it all down proves it to be a one movie film school, we discover. From the sheer inventiveness put into it's design, the near cosmic series of coincidences that led to it's lightning strikes clock tower perfection, and how it gifted us a new breed of story and film-making. And the hit Huey Lewis song Power of Love. A GIFT, I say!

A Tale Of Two Spielbergs

There is a director in our midst who operates beyond the confines of genre. His filmography is as vast as space, and as timeless as infinity. He is the middle ground between light and shadow, between history and fantasy, scarf and baseball cap. His blu-rays lay between the pit of your sci-fi collection, and the dusty shelf where you keep an unopened copy of Empire Of The Sun. That's the signpost up ahead, your next stop: the finale to Spielberg Month here on BOP! In this episode, we ponder how one of the greatest living directors can switch between such radically different modes of filmmaking, the surprising ways these tones overlap in his best films, and the subtle connections uniting the stories he's dedicated his life to telling. Plus, in a Box Office Pulp exclusive, we visit a parallel world and discover reviews of Spielberg films he never even made!

HOOK Commentary Track

Gooooood morning, Neverland! Welcome back to the only podcast that can fly, that can fight, that can even god damn CROW. And if you've managed to find your marbles, you know this is Steven Spielberg Month, which means we've conjured our happiest thought to provide a BOP 'n A Movie feature commentary for what may be his most polarizing picture, 1991s sometimes too-cheesy-for-it's-own-good family classic -- HOOK! Some love it, some despise it, and there's very little in-between. The Crew tries to get to the bottom of why that is, and the answer might cause you to respect Hook a little more, regardless of where you fall. From Spielberg's own complicated thoughts on the finished product, it's long gestation period, how it re-contextualized the tale of Peter Pan without going the deconstructionist route, all to build a unique perspective on aging and parenthood, and not to mention Robin Williams giving one of his most interesting and passed over performances, we do our best to give this equally cherished and reviled flick the once over it demands! But above it all, there's Smee. Yes, yes, Rufio. We know. We love Rufio, too. But SMEE, people!

MINORITY REPORT

Open your mouth in wonder while moving in distinct L-shaped patterns, because this is the beginning of Steven Spielberg Month! AKA The Two Faces Of Steve, AKA Spielberg Dead Ahead, AKA a third joke. And we're kicking it off with one of his most stylized and off-kilter films: 2002's Minority Report. While much of the talk today concerns its chillingly accurate predictions of modern technology, the Crew find this to be one of the director's deepest films, and they discuss the political climate that influenced it's tone, the adaptation's meaningful deviations from Philip K. Dick's story, and the lengths Spielberg went to in order to create one of the most iconic futerscapes in film.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (2017)

Our name is Box Office Pulp, and we are probably the least professional movie podcast in the world. Which is why we're so upset that our relaxing train ride has been interrupted with murder most foul! We actually have to record an episode when all we want to do is read Dickens and eat cake. So, in an episode where everyone - yes, even you, dear listener - is a suspect, The Crew curls their double mustaches for a sit down chat about Kenneth Branagh's superb adaptation of Agatha Christie's whodunit masterpiece, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS! How did Branagh and screenwriter Michael Green give us a new, laser focused contextualization of Hercule Poirot, a character as legendary as Mr. Holmes, but whom gets none of the credit, all without re-inventing him from the ground up? What of the Old Hollywood filmmaking the film gifts us? The acting porn packed into one long tube of A-Listers? How the film take us on a philosophical sojourn while still giving us Willem Dafoe with a silly accent? And how has the history of the mystery informed storytelling to this day? The answers are FULL of the fudge! But, like, in a good way. Not that fudge is usually diabolical.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 Commentary Track

There once were three podcasters who took it upon themselves to record a commentary track for every film in a very beloved series. Nearing the end of their Wizarding journey, they found the final adaptation had been split in two! Being podcasters with little to no lives outside their hobby, though, they simply waved off any prior obligations and sat down for the first of their final two Potter BOP ‘n A Movie tracks! The Golden Trio find themselves lost in some woods, and lost emotionally, as a movie often tossed aside and mis-remembered as  nothing more than stretched out prelude, may in fact, be one of the most interesting and best in the canon, and a real showing of what David Yates can do once he’s figured himself out. The kids forever leave childhood behind and are violently forced to confront being adults in a world at war in: HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART ONE!

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE Commentary Track

Our Unbreakable Vow to provide a BOP 'n A Movie Feature Commentary for every Harry Potter film remains unbroken! For we have reached the penultimate entry in the series (technically!). An entry in which, every day, every hour, this very minute, perhaps, dark and moody cinematography attempt to depress the hell out of you! Then again, maybe seeing the young hero we've watched grow up before our eyes struggle relentlessly with Wizard PTSD is what's doing that. With this film, Steve Kloves returns, David Yates starts finding his groove, and we learn a whole lot about love... until we're reminded that love has an opposite, and it rears it's ugly head in one of the best gut-punching finales in cinema. So, take your liquid luck, crack open your potions book, and join us for the somewhat polarizing, HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE!

EVIL DEAD (2013) Commentary Track

The BOP Crew wants you folks to CUT IT! But if you've somehow managed to not read from a cursed book bound in human flesh and become possessed, then you're definitely ready to join us in this sojourn into the woods for this extra special BOP 'n A Movie feature commentary! Why so extra special, you ask? Because we find ourselves celebrating the five year anniversary of Fede Alvarez's supremely underrated EVIL DEAD remake! Entwined within this audio recorded in human blood, we delve into the aftermath of it's release, the abandoned franchise plans - including the crossover with Ash himself! - and the overlooked and hefty sub-textual themes of drug abuse, addiction, and self-destruction this film carries with it! Evil Dead deserves your respect, and if you don't give it, Mia WILL probably shove a chainsaw in your face.

Ever found yourself locked in a band's green room, surrounded by Patrick Stewart wielding neo-nazi's, and armed with nothing more but the enduring anarchic spirit of punk? After listening to this, we hope you sit there, blood on your knuckles, beer down your shirt, sick on your shoes, knowing you'll never listen to a finer podcast than this one. And you know what? You probably will. No one has ever been drunk enough to actually believe otherwise. But all the same, join us in this BOP 'n A Movie feature commentary for Edgar Wright's THE WORLD'S END! The final entry in the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. Mmm gotta love that blood and ice cream. Or in this case - alcohol! And copious amounts of it.
