The Humbugs of Cinema: A Christmas Carol(s) Retrospective

Old Box Office Pulp was better than its word. It returned to the well of Dickens yet again that December, to spend another holiday discussing where the adaptations of A Christmas Carol fell on the gravy-grave scale. They ranked the various Scrooges, Fezzywigs, Marleys, and infinitely more; and to Cody, who did NOT die of alcohol poisoning last commentary, there was much introspection on the logistics of employing a street urchin, the bizarre phenomenon of Scrooge Action Scenes, why Albert Finney decided to go Full Witch, whether London bookie Eddie Scrooge ever beat that murder rap, and whether the miser truly ever had become as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the movies always said. And so, as BOP Guy once observed, "Box Office Pulp hasn't felt holiday cheer since he licked a car battery and was legally dead for thirty seconds!"

Mini BOP - THE SLEEPER MUST AWAKEN: MAKING DUNE

From the darkness of De Laurentiis, the author longs to see. One shoots out in Mexico City, space fetus walk with me. Streaming exclusively on Arrow Video comes The Sleeper Must Awaken: Making Dune, and Mike n' Jamie are here to talk about the documentary the whole seitch has been waiting for! With attention on the recent adaptation, many have revisited the first attempt to bring Arrakis to life (the first to make it to screen, at least). A critical and commercial disaster, the movie is remembered mostly for burning David Lynch on the Hollywood system and setting him down a stranger, owl-strewn path. But this doc shows just how much love and innovation went into a film deemed impossible, and even the most jaded Dune Dude might find themselves looking at the desert planet with a fresh wonder. Not to mention more gimp-suit content than you can shake an Everett McGill at!

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL Commentary Track

2021 was dead, to begin with. Dead as a doornail. And to lay it to rest, we've embarked on a most joyous recording: a commentary track for the beloved The Muppet Christmas Carol, cherished by many a soul as the best adaptation since Charles Dickens first put quill to parchment. Our brothers in felt's first outing after the death of Jim Henson, this holiday classic boasts career-highlight performances from Michael Caine, Steve Whitmire, and Rizzo The Rat as Himself. But did it hold a candle to the Scrooge chronicles before and after? And would the BOP Crew be able to reflect on childhood nostalgia, Muppet politics, and the  evergreen social relevance of the story before the brisk runtime was at an end? If you can step over the beer bottles Cody is dragging behind him, sit an evening with us and we'll tell you the tale!

COLOR OUT OF SPACE

From the cthonic dank of the interwebs comes a podcast of most immemorial effulgence! An innumerably indescribable discussion on a frenzied blaze of cosmic daemonicum! Okay, we'll stop now. But in our defense, we're just so darn excited to talk up the madness of one Howard Phillip Lovecraft! Recently, in some glorious begotten miracle from the Great Old Ones, the legend himself, Richard Stanley, returned to filmmaking after 20-plus years with an absolutely mind-bending adaptation of one of Lovecraft's greatest and most terrifying, COLOR OUT OF SPACE! So, join us as we dissect the horror Lovecraftian horror, what Stanley added from an allegorical standpoint, and how Nic Cage is not the meme you think he is.

BOP's Lot: The Best of Stephen King

The author from Maine strode across the silver screen, and the BOP Crew followed. Not, like, in a stalker way or anything, we just-- it's a podcast, okay? And in honor of this year's love affair with the man, we're spotlighting the legend, inspiration, and goddamn industry that is Stephen King! People (mainly us) have gushed about The Shining and IT aplenty, but what about the lesser-known cinematic gems from the most-adapted author since God? Listen to Cody Flagg, Mike Renfield, and It Was Always Meant To Be Jamie as they revisit the time two masters of horror gave us the love story of a boy and his Plymouth; a tale of revenge from beyond the grave from the man who resurrected Jason; the only Rob Reiner movie more upsetting than North; the evilest of fucking rooms, and more!

Mini BOP - PET SEMETARY (2019)

Follow us to the sacred place. No, folks, this ain't a dream, and you can't escape! The moon is full and the air is still, and we are just covered in undead cat hair. Which can only mean one thing... dead really is better. But so is BOP! In this episode, Mike and Cody exhume themselves for a chat on the new adaptation of Stephen King's darkest work: PET SEMETARY. We discuss the impressive changes from the source, how it captures King's themes, some spooktastic atmospheres, and difficulties in translating the book's particular brand of unsettling to the big screen. But, most importantly, we learn that we all could use a little more Wendigo in our lives. Open your hearts, people!

MINORITY REPORT

Open your mouth in wonder while moving in distinct L-shaped patterns, because this is the beginning of Steven Spielberg Month! AKA The Two Faces Of Steve, AKA Spielberg Dead Ahead, AKA a third joke. And we're kicking it off with one of his most stylized and off-kilter films: 2002's Minority Report. While much of the talk today concerns its chillingly accurate predictions of modern technology, the Crew find this to be one of the director's deepest films, and they discuss the political climate that influenced it's tone, the adaptation's meaningful deviations from Philip K. Dick's story, and the lengths Spielberg went to in order to create one of the most iconic futerscapes in film.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (2017)

Our name is Box Office Pulp, and we are probably the least professional movie podcast in the world. Which is why we're so upset that our relaxing train ride has been interrupted with murder most foul! We actually have to record an episode when all we want to do is read Dickens and eat cake. So, in an episode where everyone - yes, even you, dear listener - is a suspect, The Crew curls their double mustaches for a sit down chat about Kenneth Branagh's superb adaptation of Agatha Christie's whodunit masterpiece, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS! How did Branagh and screenwriter Michael Green give us a new, laser focused contextualization of Hercule Poirot, a character as legendary as Mr. Holmes, but whom gets none of the credit, all without re-inventing him from the ground up? What of the Old Hollywood filmmaking the film gifts us? The acting porn packed into one long tube of A-Listers? How the film take us on a philosophical sojourn while still giving us Willem Dafoe with a silly accent? And how has the history of the mystery informed storytelling to this day? The answers are FULL of the fudge! But, like, in a good way. Not that fudge is usually diabolical.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 Commentary Track

The Boy Who Lived... has come to die... And Box Office Pulp has come to graduate from Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Many werewolf full moons ago we took off in Hagrid's side car on a quest that took us from a cupboard under the stairs, to one of the greatest cinematic worlds ever produced, all to plumb the intricacies and artistry of a once in a lifetime series that actually stuck a landing! And boy, what a landing. BOP 'n A Movie opens at the close to provide a feature commentary for HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART TWO! The, at times, tragic, but often triumphant culmination of a franchise that many, literally, grew up on. As for our final word on J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World and all those who put their blood, sweat, tears, and tolerance of Dobby into bringing it to life? Always.

Tales From The BOP: THE SNOWMAN

Mister Police. You could have saved yourself from watching this movie. I gave you all the reviews. But still you did. Still you watched due to the promise of Michael Fassbender battling a Snowman themed serial killer. Now look at you, a shadow of your former self. But luckily, for the rest of you, one member of the BOP Crew has turned his soul crushing viewing experience into this spine-tingler of a TALES FROM THE BOP! All in hope you don't meet his same twig-armed fate! This time, Mike weaves for Cody and Jamie, a story of Charlotte Gainsbourg dry humping our lead actor, a Dubbed Val Kilmer growling in a tub, scenes that play our perilously without any sense of rhythm or connection to plot, and a director who has disowned his own film! Allow me to introduce you all to the botched adaptation of the worldwide best-selling novel... THE SNOWMAN!

The first snow has fallen. Melt any sinister snowmen that may have appeared by downloading the episode here!

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE Commentary Track

Our Unbreakable Vow to provide a BOP 'n A Movie Feature Commentary for every Harry Potter film remains unbroken! For we have reached the penultimate entry in the series (technically!). An entry in which, every day, every hour, this very minute, perhaps, dark and moody cinematography attempt to depress the hell out of you! Then again, maybe seeing the young hero we've watched grow up before our eyes struggle relentlessly with Wizard PTSD is what's doing that. With this film, Steve Kloves returns, David Yates starts finding his groove, and we learn a whole lot about love... until we're reminded that love has an opposite, and it rears it's ugly head in one of the best gut-punching finales in cinema. So, take your liquid luck, crack open your potions book, and join us for the somewhat polarizing, HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE!

Once again, we must ask too much of you, audience. Take our arm and download the commentary here!

Our special Potterific BOP 'n A Movie trek into Diagon Alley continues, and we've officially reached adolescence! Which means... THE TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT! The last full on whimsical time for our spectacled hero, as the series reaches maturity with a film that takes us both to the most joyous of heights the series is capable of, but also to the darkest of left turns, where, in the words of Hermoine... nothing will ever be the same again. READY PLAYER ONE

A podcaster who hates his podcast. A hidden cameo, and tangents not forecast. Click the link, ignore our past, and this episode of BOP will be yours at last! As you can tell by CGI Cody feeding you wizard riddles, The Crew is logging on to The Oasis to talk Steven Spielberg's ode to pop culture - READY PLAYER ONE! We dig into the film's surprisingly nuanced approach to nostalgia, compare Ernest Cline's book to Zak Penn's nearly unrecognizable script, debate whether Wade Watts is a nice guy or a "Nice Guy", and remind ourselves periodically that, yes, Steven Spielberg directed scenes with THOSE characters.
